General class information
Gymnasts must wear a black bodysuit for classes. These are available at
the following stores:
- Walmart

- Tu the Pointe (4226 66th St, Edmonton)
- On Stage (10004 79th Ave, Edmonton)
- United Cycle (10323 78th Ave, Edmonton)
Bare feet or gymnastics shoes only—no socks or tights.
Hair should be tied back and kept off the face.
Classes start promptly at 6:00 and 6:45pm – please make sure your gymnast arrives slightly early so that she/he can fully participate in warm-up (good exercising habits start early!). Gymnasts who are more than 10 minutes late may not be able to fully participate in class.
Apparatus is provided for ALL recreational gymnasts however RG equipment is available at United Cycle in Edmonton (10323 78th Ave, Edmonton).
What will participants learn in class?
Each class will incorporate a short warm-up, stretching, body skills (balances, turns, leaps and jumps) and apparatus skills (rope, hoop, ball, ribbon, scarf and others) as well as games and other fun activities!
Gymnasts will learn skills from the PRISM program – developed in Alberta, PRISM is a series of levels designed to develop body and apparatus skills in a progressive manner.
At the end of each session, gymnasts will receive a “report card” outlining which skills they’ve learned, acquired and mastered as well as a PRISM ribbon. Once a gymnasts has completed a particular level (Rainbow, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet), showing mastery of the majority of the skills she/he will receive a PIN (in general, for Rainbow and Red levels it will take about one session to complete, for Orange level and higher, it will take 2-3 sessions to complete).
PRISM follows the guidelines set by the Long-Term Athlete Development program developed by the Canadian Sport Centres. Athletes who progress through LTAD experience training and competition in programs that consider their developmental age. PRISM focuses on the first three levels of LTAD:
- Active Start: learning fundamental movements (running, jumping, twisting, kicking, throwing, catching) and link them together into play.
- FUNdamentals Stage: learn fundamental movement skills and build overall motor skills by focusing on the ABCs of athleticism—agility, balance, coordination and speed.
- Learning to Train: focus is on overall sport skills development and development of endurance, flexibility and strength.
Performance Opportunities outside of class
All recreational gymnasts will be encouraged to participate in local events
(Christmas Parade, Devon Days, etc.). More information about how to sign up and details about the events will be posted on the News page as they become available.
Every April, a Provincial Gymnaestrada is hosted by one of the RG clubs in Alberta. It is a large general gymnastics event, featuring group performance routines only and is an opportunity for recreational and performance team gymnasts to strut their stuff! This is typically a one-day (afternoon) event.
If there is sufficient interest, recreational gymnasts in both age groups will be encouraged to attend. Gymnasts will learn a routine in class which they will then perform at Gymnaestrada. In 2010, the Provincial Gymnaestrada will be in Edmonton.
What is the next step after recreational classes?
Do you:
- Practise your splits in front of the TV?
- Roll oranges up and down your arms?
- Impress your family and friends with all the new skills you learn in class?
Then the Pre-Team is the place for you!
Gymnasts who show interest and desire in pursuing rhythmics at a higher level (learning more complex skills, gradually increasing training commitment, opportunities to compete and perform locally, regionally and internationally), will be encouraged to try-out for the Pre-Team. Try-outs will occur each year at the end of the spring session. Pre-Team commitment will be for one year. For more information about the Pre-Team, please click here.
